The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of pathogen.

This post is the lead senior scientist within the influenza group in the Research Dept. The group is involved with pathogenesis and transmission models for influenza studying clinical, virological/molecular and histopathological parameters. A number of pre-clinical studies to evaluate therapeutics and vaccines are also ongoing. You will lead and expand the project team’s ongoing internal and collaborative studies. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to further develop their career and build the group in a recognised centre of excellence of translational research with extensive internal and external collaborative opportunities.

You must have a PhD and significant post-doctoral research experience - or equivalent - in influenza virology and/or molecular biology. You must be recognised in the field of influenza through a publication record in peer reviewed journals and/or as expert referee/panel member and should also have evidence of leading projects/project teams and dealing with collaborators/clients.

You will be expected to take lead responsibility and manage the projects ensuring appropriate methods, assays, techniques/systems are implemented and utilised to meet project targets. You will act as principal investigator/lead specialist of the project teams taking lead responsibility to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard.

Please note that this role is not a Biomedical Scientist position and is not suitable for completing an IBMS registration training portfolio.
