Further information

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK's leading science facilities and research centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.

NPL occupies a unique position as the UK's National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative lead scientist or engineer to work in the area of polymer composite and nanocomposite materials, ideally with experience of materials characterisation and modelling, non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and condition monitoring. The work is extremely diverse and interesting, involving research into new measurement techniques and standards; collaboration with researchers in universities, national laboratories and industry; and spans a wide range of industrial applications, including aerospace, automotive, renewables and marine.

The role will be at Principal Research Scientist level and will require a PhD or Master's degree in Engineering or Materials Science, or relevant experience in either industry or academia. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team developing and validating new measurement techniques and predictive analysis/models relating to polymer composite and nanocomposite materials. The applicant should be self-motivated and proactive, have good communication skills, be able to demonstrate scientific leadership in science (an ability to define and lead a scientific area), and able to demonstrate an active publication record.

The Polymer Composites Group at NPL is internationally recognised for the development of new and innovative measurement techniques and metrology standards. It has world-leading capability in mechanical, thermal and physical characterisation of polymer composites and nanocomposites, particularly in the areas of mechanical and environmental testing, NDE, condition monitoring and predictive analysis. New research areas include ultrasonic, microwave and active thermography inspection of composites, residual stress measurement, fibre optic based techniques for condition monitoring, and development of optical techniques for quantitative measurement of nanodispersion.

In addition, the candidate will have the ability to:

·         Develop scientific strategy and a desire to progress their career

·         Demonstrate ingenuity, innovation, flexibility, drive and creativity leading to the creation of project proposals and forming consortiums

·         Undertake scientific research leading to peer-reviewed publications

·         Demonstrate excellent communication skills and share their passion for science

·         Be a leader in the national and international scientific community

·         Forge connections with academia and industry to maximise the benefits to the UK of the developments
