Role Purpose/Accountabilities:
*Develop software and data systems supporting the management and analysis of biological data in a challenging and rapidly changing research area
*Work independently and as part of small teams to design and build applications using web technologies, scripting languages, and high-performance computing
*Design and build relational databases
*Integrate systems and data sources by building services and ETL (extract/transform/load) applications
*Provide support for delivered systems and troubleshoot production issues
*Work directly with stakeholders to define system requirements
*Apply sound software engineering approaches and fundamental computer science concepts to create efficient, well-designed, and easily maintained systems
*Interface effectively with diverse stakeholders and team members to design and support information systems
*Continually expand skill set by staying on top of advances in software engineering, high performance computing, and the computing needs of biological research
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Critical knowledge: *B.S. degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline
*Sound knowledge of computer science fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, and database design principles
*Sound knowledge of software design principles
*Understanding of the software lifecycle and development processes
Critical Experience:
*4 years professional experience in software development
*4 years professional experience in database development
*2 years professional experience developing web applications using a Java technology stack
*Experience developing systems in within a Life Sciences organization desired but not required
Critical Technical, Professional & Personal capabilities:
*Thorough knowledge of Java 6+ and SQL
*Facility with a scripting language such as Perl or Python
*Familiarity with UNIX or Linux
*Knowledge of the life sciences, particularly genomics or genetics, desired but not required
Critical Leadership Capabilities:
*Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
Critical Success Factors & Key Challenges: *Work independently and as member of a small team to define, design, implement, and support high-quality software and data systems
*Establish productive working relationships with key scientific users and informatics professionals across a number of functional groups within a matrix organization
