Science Area Leader – Computational Materials Science £45k-£50k plus benefits

Ref: MAT-2012-SAL

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK's leading science facilities and research centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.

NPL occupies a unique position as the UK's National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

The Materials division at NPL is seeking an accomplished scientist to define and implement its future strategic direction and activities in materials modelling. NPL’s computational materials science group has a nucleus of existing staff working on projects that are funded from UK Government, EU, and industry programmes. The new science area leader will have the opportunity to expand the group’s activities and to establish new directions and themes, which may include her/his own research interests.

NPL has a strategic vision for metrology in the 2020s that incorporates the increased adoption of multi-scale, multi-physics modelling and simulation, supported by validated data. Continuum modelling and crystal plasticity are indicative examples of relevant research domains that generate productive interactions between theoreticians and experimentalists.

Candidates should have an established record in a relevant research field that demonstrates their ability to define and implement innovative strategies, along with strong leadership capabilities, and the vision to ensure that NPL maintains and further develops its world-leading status in materials metrology.

As part of the Serco Group plc, we offer competitive salaries, a wealth of career opportunities and a wide range of benefits.

NPL is based in a unique research environment which is located in pleasant surroundings on the edge of Bushy Park in south-west London. We have a host of onsite facilities including a subsidised crèche, restaurant, and a sports and social club.

NPL Management Limited is committed to supporting their people to develop both personally and professionally and is committed to equal opportunities.

To apply, please click on the 'Apply Now' button (please note that this online application form is sited on Serco's website).

Closing date: 13 July 2012
