Gevo, Inc. is an exciting, team-oriented company that is pioneering the advanced green energy industry. We are looking for an Analytical Chemist, based in Englewood, Colorado. As part of a cutting edge technology commercialization team, the Analytical Chemist is expected to make the best use of Gevo’s resources to achieve remarkable progress. This position will be responsible for conducting routine analyses, troubleshooting instruments, and developing/validating methods to meet targets. The ideal candidate must be able to efficiently analyze large datasets, observe and report on trends, optimize and/or develop chromatographic methods, and effectively discuss findings and record results in all cases. The Analytical Chemist will interact with scientists across Gevo, including areas of Biocatalyst Development, Fermentation Development, Process Development and Applications/Chemical Technology. Priority will be given to candidates with both a strong academic background in Analytical Chemistry including chromatographic theory and solid hands-on application skills (LC, GC and IC)
Requirements include:
• Bachelors degree in Analytical Chemistry. Additional expertise in General Chemistry or Biochemistry is considered a plus;
• 1-3 years of experience with reagent and sample prep;
• 1-3 years of experience with LC or GC Chromatography;
• 1-3 years of experience with LC or GC method development;
• 1-3 years of experience with LC or GC instrument repair;
• 1-3 years of experience with Data Processing and Excel;
• At least 70% of experience should be acquired in academic research or industry, either QC or R&D;
• Experience working in a quality control lab or a high volume research lab and an understanding of basic quality principles required;
• Experience with Chromatographic Data Systems, such as Chromeleon or Chemstation, and LIMS;
• Ability to apply basic chromatographic theory to chromatographic method development and troubleshooting including column, mobile phase and detector selection to solve analytical problems preferred;
• Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (operational excellence) and ASTM fuels testing methods preferred;
• Self-starter and quick-learner with a strong background in General Chemistry;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work within a team oriented environment;
• Able to prepare and deliver information in a concise, accurate and professionally written format;
• Able to work weekend days and/or weekday evenings as scheduled;
• Able to travel to support the demonstration plant or commercial plants
Responsibilities include:
• Accurately and precisely preparing and analyzing samples in complex matrices for GC, LC and GCMS (emphasis on GC-MS);
• Accurately preparing reagents and standards of specified pH, ionic strength or concentration;
• Running IC, LC and GC methods; analyzing, reviewing and properly documenting results; reporting results and conclusions to internal and external customers in a timely fashion;
• Properly recording and documenting all sample information and resulting data;
• Ensuring that Chromatographic performance is within system suitability specifications, performing routine maintenance on instruments, and assisting with instrument troubleshooting;
• Diligently recognizing, recording and communicating unidentified chromatographic peaks or other
anomalies;
• Working with other experts on the team to determine and eliminate anomalies or establish identities
of yet-unidentified compounds present in other customer samples;
• Completing infrastructure tasks such as restocking consumables and maintaining a safe and organized lab;
• Assisting with development of new methods for IC, LC and GC and writing and updating related
SOP’s;
• Applying basic chromatographic theory to chromatographic method development and troubleshooting including column, mobile phase and detector selection to solve analytical problems;
• Working in the spirit of Good Laboratory Practices using Gevo, ASTM and vendor provided methods.
