The Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative (VLSCI) is a Victorian Government initiative hosted at The University of Melbourne which aims to strengthen the life sciences reputation and capability of Victorian institutions by providing a world-class computing facility and research support, outreach and skills development services. Our aim is to be among the top life science computation facilities in the world. IBM's first Research Collaboratory for Life Sciences (Melbourne) is co-located at VLSCI also.

From July 1 VLSCI Peak Computing Facility will be operating at 870 teraflops and will include one of Australia's fastest supercomputers and the world's greenest supercomputer, the IBM Blue Gene/Q. It is dedicated to driving and supporting transformational opportunities for researchers in the emerging fields of Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Computational Imaging. The acquisition of the IBM supercomputer is the second stage of an agreement between IBM and the University of Melbourne to provide next generation computational capacity for life sciences research within the VLSCI.

Having successfully steered VLSCI through Stages 1 and 2, our PCF Manager is retiring and we are looking for a replacement. The incoming PCF Manager will be expected to continue to deliver a smooth-running facility, run a service-oriented team, manage the competitive, merit-based resource allocation system and maximise access to transient and finite resources.
The PCF Manager will also be required to work with a small management team to steer the Facility into the national arena and represent VLSCI interests in a range of local, national and international fora, whilst ensuring that all staff are working with stakeholders and the research community to encourage appropriate levels of collaboration and contribution are achieved and research opportunities are maximised.

The position requires an individual with strong leadership, management and communication skills, the capacity to lead by example and to encourage and support staff in the delivery of excellence in the smooth-running of this significant Victorian research infrastructure project.

The position will report directly to the Director, VLSCI.

Employment Type: Full-Time (Fixed Term) position available to 31 December 2015
