Reporting to the Director, Core Services and Business Development in Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech, the Genomics Research Laboratory Manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the genomics laboratory, a state-of-the-art cost-recovery facility dedicated to serving VBI, Virginia Tech, and other external clients. The manager will be expected to effectively manage personnel and coordinate all genomics-related and next-gen sequencing services, workflow management, sample processing, customer service, equipment maintenance, data management and project billing. In addition, the manager will coordinator with the director in the development of service rate structures, marketing and strategic planning, implementation, and assessment of the genomic laboratory facilities and services. In addition, the manager may assist in the development of grant proposals and publications materials.
Given the sensitivity of research projects supported by the genomics laboratory, this position will require a Criminal Background Check.
This is a restricted appointment and the initial term will be for a period of one year renewable based on performance, needs for service, and available funding. Dependent on the qualifications of the successful candidate, this position may hold the research faculty rank of Research Associate, Senior Research Associate, or Research Scientist. Qualified candidates will have a MS with equivalent experience, in biological sciences or related field (required for rank of Research Associate); or PhD, or MS with equivalent experience, in biological sciences or related field (required for rank of Senior Research Associate or Research Scientist). Qualified candidates will also have demonstrated management experience in a molecular biology lab; exhibit prior experience in mentoring and managing technical staff; possess current knowledge of all aspects of nucleic acid methodology to include, but not limited to, DNA isolation and characterization, DNA sequencing, cloning, PCR, RNA isolation and analysis, nucleic acid quantification, gene expression analysis (microarrays and RT-PCR) and DNA genotyping. Demonstrated expertise in high-throughput data-generation including robotics and laboratory information management systems; superior laboratory documentation (i.e. protocols), customer service orientation, and communication skills; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.
Preferences will be given to candidates possessing knowledge or experience with Proteomics-based analysis approaches; evidence of publication record in peer-reviewed journals or publications; hands-on experience with NextGen sequencing protocols and equipment, such as GS FLX, Illumina, Ion Torrent, etc.; and experience working in a production laboratory.
