Schlumberger is the world’s leading supplier of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to customers working in the oil and gas industry worldwide. Employing approximately 110,000 people representing over 140 nationalities and working in approximately 80 countries, Schlumberger provides the industry’s widest range of products and services from exploration through production. Fundamental and applied research projects are carried out in Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre (SCR) to develop new technologies for application in the oilfield.

The Fluid Mechanics Department at SCR is investigating the enhanced oil recovery processes.  We seek a fluid mechanics modeller to join our team, to help us understand how the injection of multi-species chemical formulations containing high molecular weight polymers, surfactants, and other components into an oil reservoir enhances recovery.   This will require formulating and solving mathematical models both at the scale of the rock pores and also at the larger reservoir scale.  Due to the complexity of the processes and geometries involved, this will require a combination of large scale numerical simulation and semi-analytical modelling.  Physically the systems of interest comprise complex soft matter, both confined and in flow.

The candidate should hold a PhD in applied mathematics, or another discipline involving the formulation, solution and numerical simulation of mathematical models for physical/physico-chemical systems.  They will have experience of formulating and solving problems relating to multiphase flow in porous media, and of the development of computational simulation techniques for such applications.  Knowledge of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, and/or of micro emulsion physico-chemistry is desirable.  We will also be looking for evidence of original research contributions, and the ability to work closely with experimentalists.
