Staff Scientist
This is a high impact position within the nation’s premier academic cGMP manufacturing and translational research program at City of Hope. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the development of state-of-the-art technologies that will have an impact on translational research throughout the nation, potentially leading to the early clinical evaluation of many first-in-man hESC clinical trials. This position will interact and collaborate with a team of scientist highly trained in stem cell research and GMP manufacturing.

Within City of Hope, the Center for Applied Technology (CATD) is dedicated to the translational science. Its focus is to move novel, emerging laboratory technologies into early phase clinical studies. The CATD currently has an opening for an Associate Research Professor who will provide scientific leadership in the development of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based therapies. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the field of cell biology, especially hESC/iPSC. The candidate is expected to provide leadership in the following areas:
1) development of efficient and scalable processes for the expansion and banking of hESC and iPSC lines, as well as the directed differentiation of these cells into various progenitor and terminally differentiated cell types;
2) the development of assays for the characterization of hESC and iPSC and their differentiated progeny, using protein and gene expression and , genetic and epigenetic monitoring;
3) the development of purification and enrichment methods based on the physical and genetic properties of the differentiated cell type ;
4) characterization and evaluation of the role of the extracellular matrix and role of the cell culture substrate in the optimization of cell expansion and differentiation processes.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
1. Ph.D degree with a minimal 5 years of research experience in the field of cell biology post graduation, a track record of accomplishment in research and publications in high impact scientific journals. Experience in Biotech environment is very desirable.
2. Ability to effectively lead a team of 2-5 scientists in a milestone-driven development environment in order to successfully meet project goals.
3. Ability to work efficiently in a matrix-managed environment. Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
4. Ability to design, execute experiments and critically interpret the experimental results and present data in a cogent and meaningful manner.
5. Ability to participate in the preparation of grant applications and publications.
6. Ability to supervise and mentor graduate students.
7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
