Research Lab Specialist
Memphis, TN

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is a premier center for research and treatment of potentially fatal childhood diseases, including cancer and certain blood, genetic, and immunodeficiency disorders. The hospital's mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude is dedicated to providing unsurpassed patient care and to advancing the health of children through biomedical research.

Currently, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has an opening for a Research Lab Specialist (Job Number 30333) in the Biochemistry Department.

The Research Lab Specialist in the Biochemistry Department assists the principal investigator with the collection and analysis of data for specified research projects. The goal of our laboratory is to determine how metabolism regulates the suppression and activation of cell death (apoptosis) and to characterize the factors involved. Specifically we use the Xenopus egg as a model system for studying the metabolic regulation of cancer cell death. The Xenopus egg extract system is an attractive model in which to study the regulation of metabolism and cell death, because an increase in key metabolic pathways is a characteristic of developing tissues, and increased expression and activity of metabolic genes provides a survival advantage for the egg, similar to that in human cancer cells. The Research Lab Specialist performs laboratory experiments with minimal supervision, develops new procedures, manages specific, but limited, laboratory functions and trains laboratory personnel. Demonstrates effort to increase knowledge of a specific area of research, participates in the presentation and/or publication of research results in departmental meetings, and journal club. Properly conducts specific projects and maintains efficient laboratory operations. Performs other duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
