PROFESSORSHIP (CHAIR) OF GEOLOGY
SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL, EARTH & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE,

Applications are invited for the permanent whole–time post of Professor (Chair) of Geology in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) at University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland.

The successful candidate will play a major role in the leadership and further development of the Discipline of Geology within the School and will be expected to develop and implement a research vision for Geology, drawing on existing strengths and expertise in BEES. The appointee will be a dynamic, exceptional geologist of international distinction and reputation, who is currently leading innovative research and supervising postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers. Evidence of significant on-going grant capture and an outstanding publication record is essential. Compatibility of geological research interests with current national and international research priorities and those of the School is highly desirable. The candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to, and actively develop, teaching at all levels. Strong leadership, good communication and management skills are essential.

The Discipline of Geology in the School of BEES has a particular strength in field-based research and teaching. Existing staff and postgraduate research strengths in Geology include palynology, marine geology, structural geology, igneous petrology, sedimentology and applied geophysics. The School has recently invested in new rock preparation facilities and a dedicated palynology laboratory. In addition, Geology is a partner in and has full access to a number of national research facilities including the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry (NCIG) and the Environmental Research Institute (ERI).

UCC is in the top 2% of universities in the world.  The University is situated in Cork City, recently European cultural capital and the second city of Ireland, and has ready access to a range of diverse geological field settings. The School of BEES (http://bees.ucc.ie) is one of the most research-active schools in UCC. The Discipline of Geology has on-going and excellent collaborative research relationships with all national and many international geoscience institutions.

The Discipline of Geology currently offers and delivers BSc Geology and BSc International Field Geosciences undergraduate degree programmes. Geology also delivers a BSc Earth Science degree (jointly with Geography) as well as contributing to a number of other degree programmes. In addition, the Discipline has developed and launched a new taught MSc in Exploration Field Geology. Geology staff members are also actively involved in the supervision of postgraduate MSc and PhD researchers. UCC geoscience graduates are internationally-recognised and are in high demand by industry and research employers.

The salary scale (new entrants) for this post is €113,604 - €145,953 per annum.
