Cefas is an internationally prestigious scientific research and consulting centre. We are an Executive Agency of Defra; providing aquatic environmental scientific evidence and regulatory advice to inform UK Government policy. In addition, we provide products and services to a wide range of national and international bodies, including the European Commission and the World Bank.
A scientist with experience in ecological modelling, remote sensing and plankton ecology is required to integrate marine observations and model output in support of projects delivering data internally to Cefas and for advice to UK government. We are seeking to appoint an individual within our Pelagic Sciences Team who can integrate observations, model results and data across the disciplines of oceanography and ecology.
You will be required to support projects requiring modelling, biological oceanography and ecological expertise. You will have excellent numerical skills particularly in the analysis of large spatial datasets, and also a thorough understanding of ecosystem functioning particularly in the pelagic domain. Although you would not be expected to develop new ecosystem models, you should have a thorough understanding of these models and be able to interpret their outputs. The job may also entail working at sea or in the field, and the operation of oceanographic instruments. You will be able to communicate results via written and oral means to a variety of stakeholders.
At the PB6 level the job holder will be expected to initiate new projects related to policy priorities and contribute to group and divisional strategic business aims.
