The Speke site will become a Centre of Excellence for the manufacture and supply of vaccine products. Their historic performance as a site, and their can-do attitude and approach will enable Speke site to meet the needs of an expanding MedImmune network and become a location of choice for future product manufacture within MedImmune globally.

As part of this investment MedImmune are seeking to build upon the technical expertise of the Speke site and as such are seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist (Virology) to join their MS&T (Manufacturing, Science & Technology) department to lead the core virology group to generate and characterise live attenuated influenza vaccine for their Flumist™ product.

Using reverse genetics the Senior Scientist will lead a core group of experienced scientists who create the seasonal influenza vaccine, and take ownership over rapidly producing and improving vaccine virus yield. Reporting in to the MS&T Assoc. Director you will support through collaborations with R&D, Product Development, production and quality groups.

Key responsibilities include:

·Create and improve seasonal vaccine virus and conduct various tests to evaluate vaccines for their antigenicity and immunogenicity, and recommend vaccines for manufacture.

·Coordinate with the Development group to conduct manufacture related tests and interface with other functional groups including Contract Laboratories on various activities.

·Serve as a resident expert in influenza virology to provide scientific support to other functional groups.

·Lead the scientific and technical development of unior members of staff

·Provide technical support to production, quality control and quality assurance groups during investigations

·Liaise and coordinate MSAT activities, ensuring alignment with business objectives and needs

·Provide technical training and underpinning knowledge training to manufacturing and analytical departments to improve process and analytical knowledge, and understanding

·Represent the company at regulatory inspections (including FDA & MHRA) and respond to questions

·Prepare and review regulatory documentation (CMC) and respond to information requests from agencies


The ideal candidate for this position will hold an expert level of understanding within the field of virology, supported by a PhD/EngD in a Molecular Biology or associated field. You will hold extensive experience from a bio-manufacturing environment ideally having developed vaccines for manufacture applying QbD, PAT, DoE principles and statistical analysis.

You will have proven project management and supervisory experience with a strong collaborative approach to development projects, able to inspire and lead a team of technical experts in the pursuit of commercial goals. The successful Senior Scientist will also have the ability to before well under pressure and work to seasonal demands of the influenza vaccine manufacture, requiring teams to work well together and remain inspired and motivated.
