The Speke site will become a Centre of Excellence for the manufacture and supply of vaccine products. Their historic performance as a site, and their can-do attitude and approach will enable the Speke site to meet the needs of an expanding MedImmune network and become a location of choice for future product manufacture within MedImmune globally.

As part of this investment MedImmune are seeking to build upon the technical expertise of the Speke site and as such are seeking to appoint a Cell Culture Scientist to join their MS&T (Manufacturing, Science & Technology) department to develop cell culture processes, for the rapid expression and scale up of IgG using in-house protein expression technologies as part the development programme to culture live attenuated influenza vaccine for their Flumist™ product.

Key responsibilities include:

·Designing and conducting experiments to ensure that project objectives are met.

·Plasmid DNA scale-up and purification for routine transfections

· Manipulation of DNA vectors to allow transfection for both transient and stable cell line construction, based on CHO cells or MDCK cells.

· Setting-up and scaling-up IgG production using transient expression systems.

· Construction and screening of stable cell lines for production of recombinant protein.

· Managing the general day-to-day cell culture activities

· Contributing to the scientific direction of technology development within Cell Sciences.

·Draft appropriate reports as required

·Provide support through operational and technical expertise to junior members of staff

·Provide technical support to production and quality groups during investigations


The ideal candidate for this position will hold an expert level of both theoretical and hands-on understanding of cell culture manufacturing processes, supported by a degree or PhD in a Molecular Biology or Life Sciences topic. You will ideally hold extensive experience from a bio-manufacturing environment ideally having developed and optimised cell cultures for manufacture applying QbD, PAT, DoE principles and statistical analysis.

You will have proven research and development experience with a strong collaborative approach to commercial development projects, able drive a tight deadline of work in the pursuit of commercial goals, specifying and validating process equipment, instrumentation and manufacturing processes. The successful Cell Culture Scientist (I/II) will also have the ability to perform well under pressure and work to seasonal demands of the influenza vaccine manufacture, requiring teams to work well together and remain inspired and motivated.
