
Reed Scientific are looking for a talented Optical Design Engineer to be based within a manufacturing facility in South Wales to build and drive a Research and Development Centre of Excellence for optical products. This is a unique opportunity to directly contribute to the success of a market-leading specialist in the field of scientific instrumentation for all aspects of Human Health and Environmental Health areas.
The successful candidate would firstly work in a cross functional role between current R&D facilities and Manufacturing before developing a specialist facility in the fields of Lithography, Thin films, Metrology, Zemax, Matlab, Interferometry, Ellipsometry, Process controls, Process monitoring, Optical depth profiling, Diffraction theory and Image processing.
They must be able to define specifications of Efficiency, Reflectivity and Wavefront and be proficient in the use of interferometers to measure various optical components such as gratings, parabolas, spheres and flats. The understanding of optical surface quality specifications and both "conventional" and ISO 10110 optical specifications would be an advantage.
Key to the role will be the ability to work directly with Customers to understand the problems and develop solutions that exceeds the Customer expectations.
The role will require proficiency in the following disciplines:
The ability to work with customers to design optical coatings.
The skill to interpret optical measurement results to provide a controlled total solution to customer concerns.
Ability to optical test and analyse results, diagnosis of issues and plan resolution/corrective action to be taken to resolve any quality/technical issues, working with the customer, production team and other R&D facilities.
Ability to analyse & justify projects and apply problem solving tools and techniques.
Preferred Candidate will have the following:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent in Optics, Chemistry or related technical field with experience with a process orientated organisation.
Experience including Optical Component Design, Vacuum Coating, Thermal Set Polymers and Epoxies, Holography, or Nanotechnology.
An understanding and knowledge of Diffraction Grating markets, segments, branding and competitive analysis.
Additional preferred skills:
Knowledge of gratings i.e. Grating equations (diffraction angle for given wavelength, groove spacing, diffraction order) and Blaze Angle Meaning.
Experience in Optical Replication and in UV Optics (MgF2 and Si02 over coating).
Strong capabilities in high technology associated with the core sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology).
Excellent communication skills.
Able to communicate complex scientific information to a broad audience (Customers, Manufacturing personnel, R&D, suppliers, management, fellow engineers).Reed Specialist Recruitment Limited is an employment agency and employment business.
