Summary of Job:  An individual with a scientific background, to carry out the examination of forensic casework items by taking a share in the caseload.  This person will be expected to assist under instruction with a high level of accuracy and prepare meticulous detailed case notes for use in a Court of Law.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Ensure that high quality standards and integrity of the forensic analysis process are maintained at all times
  • To help devise examination strategies with the Reporting Scientists on a case by case basis and prepare outline summaries
  • To work under instruction with a high degree of accuracy to carry out initial examination of crime scene items to identify such evidence types as body fluids, fibres, hairs and trace evidence (e.g. glass, paint and other particulates)
  • Carrying out preliminary presumptive tests to identify body fluids such as blood, semen, saliva, faeces, urine and vomit
  • Preparation of case notes to assist the Reporting Scientists statement for (e.g.) police, CPS, coroner
  • If required to liaise with police officers and other authorities to establish  forensic strategies, developments and results arising from the scientific examination
  • If required provide verbal and written testimony for their findings in a court of law
  • Responding to routine enquiries and urgent enquiries to a high standard
  • Maintain an up to date and complete technical knowledge of a broad range of forensic analysis processes
  • Contribute to the effective day to day operation of the laboratory by assisting the manager and other team members to maintain the general upkeep and high level of cleanliness of the laboratory

Job Requirements:
Education:

  • B.Sc. Degree in a scientific discipline preferred, preferably Chemistry or Biology related
  • Candidates with a BTEC in general science or appropriate A level qualifications including science subjects will also be considered

Experience:

  • General Laboratory experience
  • Working in an environment where care and attention to detail is paramount
  • Experience in forensic search work an advantage

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of computers and ability to use systems and databases
  • Background in biology and/or chemistry experience would be an advantage

  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Highly ethically motivated

  • Accurate close and colour vision

Physical Demands:    

  • This role requires good concentration, meticulous attention to detail, and accurate record keeping
  • VDU Operation
  • Sitting, standing and use of microscopes

Working Conditions:

  • A computer workstation in an air conditioned office.
  • Laboratory work
  • Will be required to take part in out of hours and weekend working rota
  • Occasional requirement to be called out for emergencies
