Research Scientist (1 year fixed term)

This position is ideal for a scientist who is keen to embark on a career studying the environmental fate and ecology of chemicals in crop production systems and the environment, in an exciting multi-disciplinary project. The opportunity would particularly suit a scientist with qualifications in soil or water quality studies or catchment ecology. The successful candidate will help design, manage and implement a field study to investigate the impact of mitigation measures to reduce diffuse pollution within agricultural catchments. Working alongside experts in a range of related disciplines, the successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop their expertise whilst making a critical contribution to the risk assessment for the development of new products and mitigation measures. Strong team working and communication skills are essential.
The offered fixed term role (1 year) requires an enthusiastic research scientist with outstanding communication and networking skills who will help to lead a collaborative research project investigating improved mitigation of diffuse pollution. Along with a degree and either relevant work/research experience or a post-graduate qualification in a relevant area of science, you will be able to demonstrate your interest in this area and the capability to direct your own programme of work. The ability to communicate the research findings effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to interact effectively with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds, will be essential.
The role will be based at Oxford Brookes University with the respected research-focused environmental charity Pond Conservation, but travel to the field sites in Leicestershire and Jealotts Hill (Berkshire) will be required.

Job Summary
With a strong understanding of ecology and environmental fate, the candidate will lead a collaborative research project undertaking critical baseline studies for an innovative investigation to assess the impact of modified agricultural systems in freshwater catchments, with the aim of demonstrating the best management Practices to protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystems services. They will co-design, conduct and interpret studies as part of this research project and communicate the research findings both within the project and externally.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
Designs, conducts and manages complex catchment study in the field, with the required laboratory support, and with critical assessment of the data being generated
Interacts directly with other staff and collaborators in the project, that will involve several partners, as well as with Syngentas own Environmental Safety teams as well as other functions across R&D
Follows and communicates latest developments and research in the general area of water and soil protection, diffuse pollution and the sustainable intensification of crop production
Gives presentations to the project team or at internal events and sometimes at events external to the company, to enable progress and development decisions to be made
Develops effective relationships and networks both within the project, Syngenta Environmental Safety and wider within Syngenta as well as with other collaborative research organisations
