We are seeking an independent and highly motivated individual to work with Dr Mohammed Imbabi of the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with staff at the School of Natural and Computing Sciences (Chemistry), on the Green Concrete Project. The focus of his / her work will be to investigate, develop and test novel approaches to improving and extending the functionality of some commonly used concrete products, to decrease energy use in the construction and operation of buildings in hot-humid climates. The work defines 1 of 4 main components of the Green Concrete Project, which additionally encompasses the investigation and development of novel low carbon cement formulations, novel cement production processes and use of a range of novel and recycled concrete aggregates. The successful candidate will be based in Aberdeen but will travel regularly to Doha (Qatar) to work with our partners over there. He / she will join a large, internationally leading multi-disciplinary research team working at the forefront of sustainable construction and materials research.

You will be expected to hold an accredited Honours Degree (BSc, BEng or MEng) at 1st class or Upper 2nd in civil engineering or other relevant engineering or materials science discipline, plus a PhD in a relevant discipline.  You will also be required to demonstrate a broad-based knowledge in one or more of the following research areas: cement and concrete materials and products (including applicable standards), engineering structures, materials engineering (including nano materials), thermal sciences, fluid dynamics, building products and manufacturing.

You will be required to demonstrate your ability to carry out high quality research, with experience of working successfully in a research laboratory, preferably at post-doctoral level and with project management responsibility. A flexible approach to work is essential, as you will be required to travel overseas frequently.  This will include being required to spend time living and working in Qatar, sometimes for extended periods.

As this post is funded by external research partners, it will be offered for a period of 4 years.  This appointment will be made subject to the usual terms and conditions of employment of the University.
