Higher Scientific Policy Advisors – Air Quality

This is your chance to join a busy and diverse team of scientists working in Defra providing technical and scientific advice on air pollution and its health and environmental impacts.

Two posts are available in an important and increasingly high profile policy area which provides support for UK, EU and international policy development on air pollution and its impacts. With your help, we will develop a robust evidence base to inform UK positions on European Union and international proposals for new legislation and emission reduction measures.

You will help to manage a programme of research on air pollution monitoring, emissions and impacts and will provide a scientific lead in challenging or supporting policy development in other government departments which could impact on air quality. You will have opportunities to develop innovative and strategic solutions for evidence delivery to ensure value for money within a resource constrained environment.

Creative and flexible in your approach, you will have a relevant scientific background together with an understanding of the main sources of air pollution. The ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly and concisely and negotiate with policy and scientific colleagues within Defra and elsewhere, research providers, research institutes, and other funders of research and development will be vital.

Posts will be based in Ergon House London. Some foreign travel will be required. Range of benefits including competitive salary, 30 days annual leave and flexible working.

Please note these posts are being advertised internally within Defra and externally at the same time. Internal applicants will be given priority. Defra reserve the right to withdraw one post subject to requirements.
