Faculty Position in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies [Canada Research Chair, Tier 2]
The Department of Wood Science in the Faculty of Forestry at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada invites applications for a tenure-track Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) to begin in July 2013. We will consider exceptional candidates in areas of manufacturing technologies who can advance fundamental knowledge and practice in the processing of wood and wood composites. The candidate should have demonstrated excellence in original research. We are especially interested in, but not limited to, candidates in any one of the following four focus areas:
- Digital design and fabrication: computer-aided design and fabrication technologies for consumer products and/or architecture. Areas and technologies of particular interest include: 3-D digital design for manufacturing; Direct digital manufacturing methods including but not limited to 3-D printing, multi-axis CNC milling, selective laser sintering and etching and deposition milling; CAD-CAM systems for architectural and structural applications
- Mechatronics: synergistic combination of electronic/computer/software/mechanical system design engineering. Areas of interest include: Computational systems for real-time control of milling and processing machines; Design of automated machinery; Robotic systems for manufacturing; Scanning and size and defect sensor systems
- Energy efficiency: reducing energy used to manufacture wood products and/or increasing energy efficiency of wooden building components and structures. Areas of interest include: Redesign of building components to increase energy efficiency; Methods of assessing the energy efficiency of building components; Renovation of wooden buildings to increase energy efficiency; Development of robust machines and integrated systems for the manufacture of highly energy efficient wooden buildings and components
- Recycling and reuse: design of wood materials and building components for ease of recycling and reuse. Areas of interest include: Development of robust machines for reusing wooden demolition waste; Novel coatings and fixings to assist recycling of wood; Scanning systems to separate different wooden waste streams and identify contaminants; Design of wooden buildings for changing family needs and ease of deconstruction
Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field and are expected to establish an outstanding, funded research program as well as contribute to both undergraduate and graduate instruction. Applicants at the level of Assistant Professor are preferred, but appointments at the Associate Professor level will be considered. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
