The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are looking for a Bioinformatician with expertise in informatics and large-scale data management to join the Applied Statistical Genetics team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
(sanger.ac.uk/research/projects/appliedstatisticalgenetics/). The successful applicant will form part of a team working to understand the genetic basis of complex diseases through use of large-scale genetic and genomic databases and will have overall responsibility for the informatics and data management of next generation sequencing and genome-wide association projects, including integration with publicly available bioinformatics data. Excellent programming skills are essential and experience with genetic data is desirable.
The HELIC study (helic.org) has been funded by the ERC to use next-generation sequencing technologies to conduct genome-wide studies in thousands of samples from European population isolates in order to explore the role of rare variants in human health. Careful and efficient management of these large datasets, and the integration of such data with the outputs from our analysis, and with public data (e.g. from the major bioinformatics databases) is critical. The current post seeks a suitably-qualified individual who will be responsible for the data management and dissemination aspects of next generation association studies undertaken by the group and who can develop a pipeline to accommodate the group’s needs in this area.
Essential Skills
• Extensive experience in the field as evidenced for example by a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Computing, Bioinformatics);
• Experience of efficiently managing and delivering very large datasets, and subsets thereof, in different formats;
• Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure to tight timelines;
• Good familiarity with programming languages e.g. Java, C++, Perl;
• Ability to communicate effectively with collaborators both internally and externally.
Ideal Skills
• Database development experience and fluency;
• Experience in using and integrating information from the main public bioinformatics resources;
• Previous experience in the area of genetics;
• Web development skills.
Other information
Key Responsibilities:
• Efficiently manage large-scale whole-genome sequencing datasets;
• Manage genotype data and results of statistical analyses;
• Create a documented system of programs that address data management and analysis needs;
• Organise statistical analysis output to summarise results and facilitate interpretation;
• Integrate data and results with external data sources;
• Liaise with collaborators and transfer technology to internal and external groups;
• Train group members;
• Direct programmatic aspects of the group’s work.
This position is fixed-term until 31st May 2017
