The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is looking to recruit four Environmental Fate and Behaviour Specialists to evaluate data submitted on the fate and behaviour of pesticides, biocides or other chemicals in the environment.

Working in Fate and Behaviour Branch of the Chemicals Regulation Directorate, you will use the data you evaluate to determine the route and rate of degradation of compounds and their transport, as well as levels of exposure in various environmental compartments. This information will then be used, in consultation with other specialists, to determine environmental and other risks.

In addition, this wide-ranging role will see you prepare written summaries of data, conduct environmental exposure assessments, present your findings internally and to other Government departments, provide technical advice and assist in the preparation of guidance documents. There may also be opportunities to train colleagues both in your specialist area and across the EU or around the world.

With a degree or equivalent qualification in Chemistry, Biology or another relevant science, you will ideally have relevant post-graduate experience – for example working on the environmental fate and behaviour of chemicals, in soil science or in a closely related scientific or regulatory field. Strong communication and teamworking skills are also essential, coupled with the ability to deliver high-quality results and make sound decisions. Experience of methods of chemical analysis, statistics and environmental exposure modelling would be an advantage.

A Directorate of the HSE, The Chemicals Regulation Directorate employs around 230 scientific, policy and support staff in York and Liverpool. Our key role is to deliver Competent Authority functions within UK and EU legislation regulating chemicals, pesticides, biocides and detergents.

As the leading authority on health and well-being in the workplace, HSE is committed to best practice as an employer. We offer an outstanding benefits package including a first rate pension scheme, very generous leave allowances and excellent working conditions.
