Investigator – Enzymology/Biochemistry

Position Purpose
We have an exciting opportunity available for an Enzymologist to join the Respiratory Disease Area of Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research. Based at the research site in Horsham, West Sussex you will be responsible, along with your team, for supporting drug discovery projects from target validation through lead optimisation to selection of clinical candidates.

Accountabilities
The primary focus of this role is to provide lab-based scientific leadership in enzymology to support projects within the Respiratory portfolio. The role also includes leading a small team, networking with other internal experts and coordinating the assay support for enzyme-based targets.

Education
The ideal candidate will be PhD-qualified (or equivalent), although BSc/ MSc level (or equivalent) candidates will also be considered.

Experience
A proven track record in enzymology, preferably from an industrial setting is required.   In addition to this, candidates will have an interest in both the theoretical and practical aspects of enzymology, ranging from assay development through to full mechanism of action studies.
You will also have an aptitude for quantitative analysis and modelling of experimental data – some knowledge in biophysical approaches to detect compound-enzyme interactions will be advantageous. There may also be opportunity to lead multi-disciplinary drug discovery project teams.

Skills

  • Highly experienced in the development of  enzymology biochemical assays
  • Proficient in liquid automation handling technologies
  • Experienced in mechanistic characterization of enzymes and LMW inhibitors (e.g. characterizing enzyme kinetics and inhibitor mode-of-action)
  • Competent in data handling packages and appropriate modeling software
  • Experienced in LMW-protein docking software in order to complement mechanistic biochemical studies

You must have first class communication and presentation skills, combined with the drive, professionalism and enthusiasm to succeed in a fast paced scientific environment.  Other essential skills sought for this role include self-motivation and experience with building strong relationships with key stakeholders.

As this is a scientific leadership position, you will ideally have some experience with managing and leading individuals; however this is not crucial to be successful in the role as long as you can demonstrate an aptitude for supervising and mentoring junior scientists.
