Research Associate in Microbiology - London, UK
Research Associate in Microbiology
UCL-Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering
The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7.
The salary range will be £33,686 - £40,716 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
Hospital air and water systems can often be contaminated with microorganisms that can cause infections in patients leading to increased mortality, hospital stays and higher costs of care. It is imperative that a cost effective method for the removal of these organisms is developed. The EPSRC funded project “Antimicrobial Filters for Hospital Air and Water Systems” (EP/N034228/1) aims to develop filters that actively kill microorganisms.
The Healthy Infrastructure Research Group in the UCL Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (UCL CEGE) is seeking to appoint a curious and rigorous scientist or engineer with an excellent understanding of microbiology to investigate the effectiveness of the antimicrobial filters. The post is for 2 years in the first instance starting on 9 January 2017.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field and be able to demonstrate an excellent understanding of microbiology and antimicrobial strategies. Experience of microbial culture and antimicrobial assays is required, as are good written and oral communication, team working and time management skills.
The position may offer opportunities to engage in teaching activities in UCL CEGE and to engage with and mentor PhD and MSc students. The post holder will work as part of a research team involving scientists from UCL CEGE, the UCL Mechanical Engineering Department, the University of Hertfordshire and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The post will also offer an opportunity to collaborate with scientists from our industrial partners such as Pall Corporation and GAMA Healthcare. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £29,485 - £31,091 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
