Senior Scientist – Analytical chemistry
Ref. EX009

Exonate Ltd (www.exonate.com) is a fast growing, dynamic pharmaceutical company focusing on translating discoveries in alternative splicing technology to therapeutics.

Following a series of major investments, we have an opportunity for an analytical chemist to enable progression of an expanding drug project portfolio in the Biology team of our Nottingham laboratories.

The role of the Exonate Biology Department is to provide in vitro and in vivo pharmacology support to discovery teams focused on identifying small molecules for the treatment of diseases of the back of the eye and other indications. The Biology Department is an integrated part of discovery programmes, supporting the identification of lead molecules through in vivo model screening and the characterization of the mechanism of action of promising development candidates.

This is a "hands-on" scientific and technical role and the successful candidate will be expected to remain active in the laboratory and "lead from the bench." Reporting to the Head of Biology, the candidate must be an expert in quantitative mass spectrometry.

A significant part of the development plan will be the detection and quantitation of newly synthesised compounds by LC-MS-MS, so ability to rapidly optimise and set up SOPs for determination of amounts and concentrations of compounds by LC-MS-MS purified from tissues and body fluids is critical. Additional experience in ELISA development, protein purification using HPLC, and other analytical methodologies would be advantageous.

In particular the ability to problem solve and work to deadlines, follow and generate good SOPs, will be essential, as this is a key support role for the rest of the team. The post-holder will be expected to communicate data to multidisciplinary teams. The candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated, innovative, a team player and must be able to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Establishment and optimization of LC-MS-MS methods and SOPs to accurately detect and sensitively quantify levels of novel compounds purified from tissue and body fluids. Preparation and extraction of compounds from experimental samples.
  • Data analysis, organization and management.
  • Interpret pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies.
  • Data presentation to multidisciplinary discovery teams.
  • Preparation of technical reports.
  • Identification of risks within function and development of contingencies plans to mitigate risk.

Qualifications

PhD in cell biology, pharmacology or relevant scientific discipline; proven work experience or relevant academic experience. MSc degree in a relevant scientific discipline with proven work experience.

Requirements & Education  A broad understanding of cellular and molecular pharmacology concepts within the ophthalmology/angiogenesis field would be advantageous. Previous experience in the biopharmaceutical industry is required with a successful record of project impact.

Technical Skills

  • Expertise and extensive experience in quantitative mass spectrometry.
  • Experience at setting up and optimising new mass spectrometry methods.
  • Experience in preparing compounds from biological samples for mass spectrometry
  • Good laboratory record keeping
  • Good safety record
  • Good data management practice
  • Excellent communication skills, able to communicate on all levels across many areas
  • Excellent experimental skills – particularly in the specific field and evidence in publications
  • Time management and project leadership skills
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and relevant regulations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Works independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Computer skills: Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Graphpad prism
