The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking to recruit a Database Architect to work at the European Variation Archive and the Database of Genomic Variants Archive , both repositories of open-access genetic variation data across more than 50 species. This information is generated and consumed by researchers all around the world.
As a successful applicant, you will join a multi-disciplinary team of developers, biologists and user support personnel. Your main responsibility will be the design of a new database architecture for interactive queries over terabytes of data, and also for efficient batch processing using a computing cluster with thousands of nodes. Multiple relational and NoSQL technologies will be evaluated and combined where necessary: the data structures we manage are quite heterogeneous.
Your work will have a high impact on the growth of both the EVA and the DGVa, and their ability to satisfy new requirements from the research community, in national and international collaborations.
The team software development cycle is managed in a collaborative way, using agile methodologies and tools such as Git, JIRA and Confluence. The applications we develop are free software, publicly available on GitHub.
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.
You should hold a bachelors or higher degree in computer science or bioinformatics.
Prior work experience should include database design in a professional or academic context, specially in production environments. Experience in genomics and bioinformatics would be desirable, otherwise interest to learn the biological domain area is required.
The abilities to work within a team, communicate efficiently and meet deadlines are essential to this position. You will be required to elaborate technical documents, take part in the daily Scrum stand-up, and provide user-oriented communication with external and internal users of the systems.
The successful candidate must have:
Good understanding of differences between relational and non-relational models (consistency, performance, etc.);
Relational database design experience;
Non-relational database design experience in at least one of the following: Cassandra, Hadoop (HBase, Parquet...), PostgreSQL hstore.
Experience in MongoDB and software development in Java would be also desirable.Benefits
