We are seeking an experienced and motivated database developer to join the Protein Function Development team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).

You will be working in a highly dynamic software engineering and bioinformatics team with responsibility for the development and maintenance of the databases supporting the UniProt, the Gene Ontology annotation and Enzyme resources. You will work in the design, maintenance and development of all team databases and provide database related expertise to the application developers.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in the development, maintenance and management of relational databases production and release operations in the area of biomolecular databases. Tasks will include:

  • Database design for new projects

  • Database maintenance, application performance tuning, and trouble-shooting for development projects and production procedures

  • Managing dev/test database resources for a large application development team

  • Coordinate, test, and implement periodic DB upgrades and infrastructure policy changes

  • Continuous monitoring of database hardware resources and forecasting growth trends

  • Prepare periodic reports to advise senior management on hardware performance reviews, technical strategy and future hardware requirements

  • Support and development of database production pipelines.

Qualifications and Experience

You will have a postgraduate degree in computer science or a related discipline with proven professional experience in developing commercial and/or biomolecular databases in a team environment. Good knowledge of Biology is important. You will be required to communicate scientific and technical documents and take part in the daily Scrum. An ability to work to tight deadlines is essential and you should have the knowledge and experience to propose technical solutions and make decisions with the team. You might be occasionally required working non-standard hours.


  • Postgraduate degree level or equivalent qualification/experience in computational, or related scientific discipline

  • Proven experience with performance tuning and developing relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and/or Oracle

  • Experience with bash scripting and advanced SQL querying and PL/SQL

  • Experience with scripting languages such as Perl/Python

  • Use of version control (e.g. Git, subversion) and notions of Continuous Integration is important (e.g. Make, ant, Apache Maven, Apache Ivy, Jenkins and SonarQube, etc.)

  • Experience in communicating and working with expert users (e.g. in a science community) in a co-development model.


  • Experience with an object orientated language like Java
  • Knowledge of usage of distribute systems.
