We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated software engineer to work at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

You will be working in the Software Infrastructure Services team maintaining and improving in-house software systems. Work will include:

  • Maintenance and development of our existing user account management system

  • Maintenance and development of a petabyte-scale file archiving solution

  • Development of new systems infrastructure software tools as required.

Software Infrastructure Services is part of the Systems Infrastructure team, whose responsibilities include HPC, storage, datacentre infrastructure and networking. You will work alongside systems administrators and software engineers providing services to internal and external users.

Qualifications and Experience

You will have a bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software development or have equivalent experience, and you will have demonstrated experience in development in a systems administration environment. Experience designing relational and non-relational data models is important. The successful candidate will be highly proficient in python and C, and be fluent in Linux-based development.

Prior work experience should include four or more year’s software development in a team environment and supporting production systems in an academic or commercial setting. The ability to work within a team and in collaboration with others is critical to this position and excellent communication skills, verbal and written, are essential. The software engineer will be required to communicate technical documents, as well as provide user orientated communication with external and internal users. An ability to work to tight deadlines is essential as are excellent English language skills and the ability to work with minimal direction when making technical decisions.


  • Degree level or equivalent qualification/experience in computational, or related scientific discipline

  • At least 4 years’ experience writing production quality software

  • Expert knowledge of Python and C

  • A good working knowledge of Linux systems administration

  • Experience with relational databases including Oracle

  • Experience in communicating and working with expert users (e.g. in a science community)

  • Experience in communicating and working with systems administrators

  • Knowledge and practice of software development best practices.

Highly desirable:

  • General Unix systems administration skills including RedHat Linux

  • Experience with FUSE development

  • Experience with LDAP and NIS

  • Experience of the characteristics and limitations of large storage systems

  • Experience with LSF or other batch submission systems

  • Experience with tape storage systems

  • Knowledge of multiple scripting languages such as Perl and Bash

  • Experience of OS deployment on both physical and virtual platforms

You will be able to pay attention to detail but also meet deadlines. You will also demonstrate innovation and a willingness to take on new challenges. You will have a passion for code development and making software that can be used. You have the knowledge and experience to make technical decisions with minimal supervision.
