With a presence in more than 70 countries - and growing - we look for talented people to grow our business, advance our science and contribute to our unique culture.  Our discovery research teams are organized into thematic centers each focused to certain areas of biology.  Within each these areas, discovery research, translational research, and early clinical development are integrated into a single team.    Summary/Scope   The Celgene Protein Homeostasis Thematic Center is seeking a talented, early-career translational investigator with a track record of scientific innovation that informs and optimizes clinical development of novel agents. In particular there is a strong focus on cancer disease mechanisms, toxicity mechanisms, and the optimization of treatment benefit in a clinical and bench-to-bedside setting.  This individual will play a key scientific role in planning analyses and deriving data from pre-clinical studies and clinical material, and using these data to inform and enable development of novel agents in Celgene’s Research and Early Development organization.    The role will focus on agents targeting protein stability and function. Significant experience in modeling the dose and schedule dependence of treatment effects and therapeutic index is particularly sought, as is expertise in hematologic malignancies including myelodysplastic syndrome, AML, myeloma, lymphoma, CLL, and related conditions.    The position will require an individual with strong scientific leadership potential and excellent communication and collaboration skills. Applications are encouraged from those looking to enable the development of truly innovative, life-changing therapies.  As a member of an integrated discovery research and early development team, this role will also involve collaboration with discovery biology and chemistry researchers, clinicians, and computational biologists.  A keen interest in the emerging biology and therapeutic potential of regulated protein turnover and stability will be helpful.    This position will report to the Translational Leader of the Protein Homeostasis Thematic center of Excellence, and will be located in San Diego, California.      Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Design and execute experiments to define and test hypotheses for selection of tumor type and patient characteristics for particular drugs, and drug combinations, including small molecules and biologics. 
  • Develop and/or characterize pre-clinical and clinical methods for measuring pharmacodynamic effects and surrogate markers for efficacy to guide determination of dose, schedule, and priority indications in clinical trials.
  • Design and execute biomarker and correlative components of clinical trials, including participation on trial teams, management of vendors, analysis of data, and communication with study investigators and other stakeholders. 

  • Qualifications



    Ph.D. in Oncology and Cancer Biology, with at least 4 years of relevant work experience, required.  At least 2 years of pharmaceutical industry experience, required.  Experience in protein homeostasis, preferred.


    Skills/Knowledge Required: 
    • Advanced, current knowledge of oncology including disease biology and treatment approaches.
    • Expert in cell biology including concepts and pathways, and experimental methods such as cell culture and cell-based assays, FACS, ELISAs, Westerns, gene expression, microscopy, si/shRNA/CRISPR, and techniques for analysis of epigenetic control of expression. 
    • Particular expertise and interest in protein homeostasis, hematologic malignancies especially MDS, bone marrow biology, and immunology is sought along with skill in associated assay methods (e.g. multilineage colony formation in bone marrow cultures, multicolor FACS and ex-vivo assays for T- and NK cell killing).
