Microbiologist - Food - UKAS - ISO 17025 - Permanent - Surrey - £competitive

Our prestigious client, a leader in their field, is seeking an experienced food microbiologist to join their expanding team on a permanent basis, where primary duties will include microbiological analysis and research. You will hold a degree in microbiology or related subject, and will have strong industrial experience working in an accredited food microbiology laboratory to ISO17025.

The Opportunity

The main scope of this role will be to carry out microbiological analysis and research as directed by the Laboratory Services Manager, following internal quality requirements or those of the UKAS quality system as appropriate. This will include using a wide range of microbiological methods covering all major pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms, to deliver shelf life and challenge testing projects, as well as novel method development.

Key Responsibilities

*To carry out microbiological analysis and research as directed by the Laboratory Services Manager according to the level of experience and training, and within company and/or UKAS guidelines where appropriate.
*To liaise with clients to provide projects as required within the specified time frame whilst maintaining confidentiality of work at all times.
*To build effective working relationships with colleagues, clients and external contacts.
*To assist with the training of staff as directed by the Laboratory Services Manager according to their level of training & experience and participate in training activities provided for one's own professional development
*To help ensure the Food Safety analytical and interpretation work is organised efficiently, in order to maximise resources, reduce costs and increase profitability.
*To assist in managing the supply of media and consumables within the laboratory.
*To help ensure the research projects and technical services are managed effectively and meet relevant targets.
*To report back on matters outside of normal competence and to keep the Laboratory Services Manager aware of any problems.
*To liaise with and to assist in providing sound microbiological advice to clients where the query falls within the scope and experience of the Microbiologist.
*To assist in identifying areas and implementing agreed changes in improving the operation of the laboratory.

Essential Experience & Qualifications Required

*Educated to degree level in microbiology (or a related subject)
*Sound knowledge and understanding of food microbiology and aseptic technique
*Strong, previous experience working within an accredited food microbiology laboratory, working to ISO 17025.
*Excellent knowledge of a range of microbiological methods including major pathogens and spoilage microorganisms
*The ability to multi task and operate effectively and efficiently in a fast moving environment
*The ability to speak confidently to clients
