AstraZeneca's Early Clinical Development (ECD) business unit are looking to recruit a Programming Team Leader to join our Clinical Trial Data Science Group based in Cambridge.

Early Clinical Development, as a business unit, is focused on delivering innovation and seeking out opportunity. This small, dynamic group allows programmers to get involved in developing multiple activities and initiatives, as well as shaping its culture and contributing towards continuous improvement in solutions delivery.

As an Early Clinical Development ECD Programming Team Leader, you will provide strategic direction and manage a team of programmers within Clinical Trial Data Science.


You will lead, manage, and develop a group of Programmers, by providing expert guidance, and mentoring. As a senior member of the group, you will lead or oversee a diverse range of initiatives, to improve quality, and integrity of information interpretation, cost, or timelines. Your experience using expert information management and leadership skills to influence and promote consistent approaches to data integration activities will support the utilisation of best practice, to enhance the value and contribution of Programming across Early Clinical Development.

Your remit will include providing a co-ordinated and consistent approach to the specification and presentation of analysis ready information, and integration of the data across all projects utilising current standards and practices. Also, you will be responsible for the provision of strategic, scientific and programming expert advice to all programmers within the team, whilst inputting into the capacity management for the programming group. As a leader, you will also ensure efficient and effective leadership and management of the Programming function through overall quality and standards.

In addition to providing leadership within the group, your experience will allow you to represent AstraZeneca and its Programming function at external events, as well as networking with colleagues and experts. You will also frequently provide consultancy in your own area of expertise and serve as a resource for others by sharing your experience within, and beyond the project team and Programming function.


To be considered for the role of Programming Team Leader, you should have an extensive comprehension of the technical and regulatory requirement of the role, whilst have significant experience using SAS in a programming environment within life sciences. You should have knowledge of Analysis and Reporting within Clinical Development and proven Programming leadership experience. In addition to this, you should have;

  • BSc or post graduate qualification (or local equivalent) in Mathematics, Statistics, Informatics, Life or Social Sciences
  • Knowledge of CDASH/SDTM/ADaM CDISC standards
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills - needs the energy to work across global & functional boundaries
  • Ability to apply programming expertise to problems, problem-solving and quality focus

  • Agile responsiveness to scientific data
  • Embracing of peer review
  • Agnostic to internal-external sourcing
