Postdoctoral Scientist - Virology
Purpose of the role:
The post concerns contribution to an ambitious programme of research funded by BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority)/HHS, USA. The main objectives of the research programme are (i) the establishment and evaluation of a new potency test for inactivated influenza vaccines and (ii) investigation of various approaches towards the improvement of candidate influenza vaccine viruses.
The post will be working mainly on objective (ii) and involves the application of a variety of virological and molecular virological techniques to create and characterise novel reassortant and recombinant influenza viruses that could act as candidate vaccine viruses. The newly created viruses will be assessed by various methods including virus growth, titration, purification, sequencing and protein and antigenic characterisation.
The post holder must be responsible and relied upon to supply data and biological material to other members of the influenza group. The role will involve handling a wide range of influenza viruses, mainly those of pandemic potential; this will involve working at containment levels 2 and 3.
As well as having a track record of successful research evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in high ranking journals, the successful candidate will be an accomplished molecular biologist/virologist, ideally with experience of influenza virus molecular biology and reverse genetics.
- PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field/ equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience
- Experience in virology, preferably with influenza viruses
- Experience of working at containment level 3 highly desirable
