Customer Marketing Manager
New Scientist

New Scientist has an exciting opportunity for a bright and enthusiastic individual to join the Audience Development team. The role will focus on maximising subscription retention for the New Scientist portfolio of products.


  • Developing and maintaining system solutions to control and automate effective communication with customers
  • Manage bureau and other external suppliers and resources in order to improve effectiveness of the renewal process
  • Responsible for all New Scientist retention activity including presenting proposals and reporting back to the publisher and marketing teams
  • Work closely with the central RBI Subscription Renewals team as well as the wider Audience Development teams for other RBI brands
  • Plan, implement and maintain subscription renewal activity for New Scientist
  • Monitor and analyse renewal response to identify potential problems or opportunities and present information to the Audience Development Team.
  • Working closely with our fulfilment bureau to ensure subscribers receive excellent customer service


  • Analytical skills. High level of numeracy and ability to pay close attention to detail.  Ability to plan, test, implement and analyse results for a range of both online and offline activity and advise on future strategy based on results/trends.
  • Communication. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels both internally and with external suppliers.
  • Prioritising. Ability to manage workload and prioritise appropriately based on urgency and ROI.
  • Marketing tactics. Ability to effectively use a wide range of marketing techniques including web and e-marketing, direct mail, inserts, advertising and telemarketing
  • Team player. Work closely with other teams within the marketing department and the publishing teams
  • Organisational skills. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines, manage several projects simultaneously and use initiative.
  • Creative copywriting. To write effective copy for direct marketing material


  • Direct marketing experience, both offline and online marketing
  • Experience of working in subscription retention marketing – preferably from a B2C role
  • Educated to graduate level
  • Preferably with a marketing qualification (IDM or CIM)
