Job Description and summary

Allergy UK is the leading national charity dedicated to supporting the estimated 21 million people in the UK affected by allergy.  It does this through a dedicated helpline, support network and online forum for those with allergic disease.  We are the only charity patient organisation that offers support for everyone affected - those with mild to severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Our advice and information covers all health areas related to allergic disease, such as respiratory, dermatology, gastroenterology, ENT, ophthalmology and immunology.

We also help to educate health care professionals who work with patients with allergic disease and are continually seeking ways to improve the quality of life for people affected by allergy.

We are now looking for a Scientific Advisor to work eight hours a week providing scientific rigour in validating test data on products that might help those affected by allergy.

You will be reviewing test data provided by a third party testing facility and writing a report, validating, or otherwise, the results of that testing against our relevant testing protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • To receive a copy of test reports and advise whether the testing is accurate, the report is acceptable and the result is favourable or not for our Seal of Approval.
  • When required to, undertake reviews of products presented for endorsement, based on independent test reports presented by the manufacturer, provide a review report detailing the reports submitted and the relevant results which qualify the product for our endorsement.
  • Advise which protocol to use and advise the testing laboratory accordingly.
  • To be the point of contact with the charity, discussing and providing advice to the Head of Endorsement and laboratory, regarding any issues that may arise during the testing procedure.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in microbiology or aerobiology.
  • Basic knowledge of allergy and allergic reactions to airborne and contact allergens.
  • Knowledge of testing procedures how to assess product performance in reduction of allergens and other aspects required.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory good working practice, containment of hazardous substances etc. ISO standards.
  • Knowledge of air borne and contact allergens, basic chemical and physical features of them, their origins, dispersal and impacts.
  • Knowledge of methods of reducing amounts of and exposure to airborne and contact allergens in the indoor environment.
  • Working knowledge of sampling and analysis techniques for allergens, including ELISA, MARIA.
  • Knowledge of how to appraise protocols for testing the range of products in the Seal of Approval.
  • Ability to design and write test protocols to international standards e.g. IEC, AHAM.
