We have opportunities at our Cambridge, UK, Research Centre for experienced and innovative scientists, wishing to develop their career in a thriving multidisciplinary, industrial environment


The role offers diverse opportunities in both software development and hands-on data analysis to answer specific biological questions. The ideal candidate will be a computational biologist with an aptitude for software development, or a computer scientist with significant experience of working in a biology related discipline.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Design and develop bespoke bioinformatics web applications and data analysis pipelines
  • Develop tools and algorithms to integrate, mine and analyse genomic and structural biology data and improve computational efficiency
  • Keep abreast of the latest bioinformatics technologies to identify new opportunities
  • Promote close interactions across multidisciplinary groups
  • Collaborate with biologists, structural biologists, computational chemists and software developers
  • Iteratively develop tools and methods on the basis of feedback from in-house users
  • Provide bioinformatics support for Astex’s drug discovery programmes

Skills and Experience Required

  • Degree in biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or related field
  • Proven software development experience working in industry or an equivalent academic setting
  • Expert knowledge in Python and at least one other language: Perl, Java, C++, R, Javascript
  • Experience with relational databases e.g. Oracle, MySQL  Experience developing web applications
  • Familiarity with common software development tools and practices (version control, testing, etc)
  • Experience in analysing a variety of biological databases (e.g. COSMIC, TCGA, Ensembl)
  • Good understanding of and ability to use standard statistical methods
  • Excellent team working, written and verbal communication skills
