Principal Responsibilities The Molecular Sciences Group at Astex Pharmaceuticals integrates multiple structural & biophysical techniques for fragment based drug discovery (FBDD). The group is currently expanding these approaches to include single particle cryo-EM. Astex recently led the formation of a unique academic-industrial cryo-EM consortium comprised of 5 industrial partners, the electron microscope manufacturer FEI and the MRC-LMB, a world leader in the field of cryoEM. The consortium provides Astex with routine access to, and ample time on, a state of the art Titan Krios microscope located in Cambridge. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to developing methodologies and pipelines that will enable cryo-EM to be exploited for drug discovery.
The cryo-EM scientist role will be laboratory based and will be focussed on grid preparation and optimisation, data analysis, processing and reconstruction. The successful candidate will be expected to work within inter-disciplinary project teams. As such, applicants should have excellent team-working and verbal and written communication skills. Additionally the successful candidate will be able to pursue their personal development through internal and external presentations, collaborations and publications in high impact journals
Skills and Experience Required
The successful candidate will:
- Have a PhD in single particle cryo-EM, or equivalent experience
- Proven post-doctoral experience using cryo-EM for structural studies of diverse protein complexes & biological systems
- Be expected to develop links and collaborations with external groups
- Have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in teams

We are recruiting for a number of roles some are permanent and some are for 2-3 year fixed term contracts depending on qualifications and experience
